Israel's First Solar-Powered Vehicle Designed by Afeka Students
Students at Afeka College of Engineering have designed and built Israel's first solar-powered vehicle. This innovative project was initiated by a Mechanical Engineering student and involved collaboration between students across programs including Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical and Software Engineering.
The solar-powered vehicle is based on an adapted EZRaider all-terrain vehicle chassis fitted with solar panels provided by EcoWatt Energy and Trailar. This aligns with the project's goal of promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse emissions.
Afeka's solar vehicle debuted at the EcoMotion smart mobility exhibition, garnering praise from industry and media. The students are also planning a nationwide tour to showcase the technology and inspire youth, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal is to use this innovative project to show all children and youth the potential of science/technology to create positive change and to get them enthusiastic about learning STEM fields.
Dan Herman, Head of Afeka's Vehicle Systems Track, mentored the automotive club students undertaking this project:
"Afeka is the only Israeli institute with a vehicle systems track in Mechanical Engineering. The solar car reflects our value of empowering students to apply their skills to benefit society."
Doron Levy, Industrial Engineering & Management student and club leader:
"Bringing the solar-powered car on a journey across Israel will be a national mission to meet the next generation of potential engineers and instill in them a passion for solving global issues."
Eden Amran, Mechanical Engineering student and club member:
"Building a solar vehicle was a personal, team and social mission. Through hands-on engineering experience and collaboration, we applied our studies, giving greater value to our education."
